Paparazzi Brief Review

Okay, Kevin's name in the credits was the only reason I went to the theater to see this one. It had mixed reviews that leaned toward the negative, and the plot seemed pretty predictable. I just had to see how and how soon his character would bite the dust! Actually, it was better than I expected, and I rather enjoyed the performances of all involved, especially Cole Hauser and Dennis Farina.

Produced by Mel Gibson, it has been touted as his statement to the real life paparazzi - keep your distance or suffer the consequences.

The lines in the movie are strictly drawn. We know who the good guys are - and they are good. We know who the bad guys are - and they are bad. Bad guy gets in good guy's face. Good guy pushes bad guy. Bad guy get ticked and pushes back. Good guy gets all righteous and doesn't take the pushing anymore! When normal channels don't work, good guy takes matters into his own hand, creating situations that we applaud from our gut even as our head says "that's not right!"

Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser) is the good guy, the unknown actor from some backwoods town, rocketed to stardom thanks to his role in a popular action flick. His sudden rise to a superstar makes him and his family fodder for the tabloids. Enter the bad guy: overly aggressive star photographer Rex Harper (Tom Sizemore) and unscrupulous cronies Leonard Clark (Tom Hollander), Wendell Stokes (Daniel Baldwin) and Kevin Rosner (Kevin Gage). The four follow the Laramie family everywhere, splashing their photos on the fronts of grocery store tabloids. Bo asks them to stop. They agree, but they don't stop. Bo throws a punch at Harper, gets sentenced to therapy for anger management and Harper seeks revenge. The Laramie family ends up in a serious traffic accident that sends Bo's wife and child into the hospital, and the audience is left to consider how far a man will go to protect the ones he loves. In a twist of fate, Laramie accidentally sends Rosner over a cliff on a motorcycle, leaving one paparazzi dead, and an idea taking root. He doesn't find it difficult to set up the next 'accident' and paparazzi Clark bites the dust thanks to the LAPD. Laramie is dogged by police detective Burton (Dennis Farina) who has suspicions, but no proof that will hold up in court. Laramie goes after Stokes and Harper, setting it up to make it look like Harper killed his partner, but it's too neat for the detective. He is suspicious at the end, but there still is no proof, and we are left with one particular paparazzi who won't be photographing anyone for a long time - and a hollywood star who gets away with murder.

As far as Kevin's role - photographer Kevin Rosner - he wasn't as nastily bad as he's been in other roles (Heat's Waingro, Knockaround Guy's Brucker) but he was certainly more than able to portray the pain-in-the-ass, in-your-face paparazzi photographer. No qualms about pointing his camera at his objective, even if that objective was seriously injured in an automobile accident. I've always thought Kevin should be on the back of a Harley, and I was pleasantly surprised to see him as a bike rider in this movie. His character's untimely death was the result of an accident, though he received no help at all from Bo Laramie, the driver he swerved to avoid - you might call it a real cliff-hanging experience for Kevin!

I'd recommend rental if you want a mindless flick to eat popcorn by!
