Double Tap Synopsis

In this film noire thriller, a lone gunman (Stephen Rea) is assassinating local drug lords; an undercover FBI team (featuring Heather Locklear) is trying to track him down. Kevin Gage plays one of the FBI agents.

Double Tap Brief Review

The reviews are generally awful, but I have to admit I kinda enjoyed the film in spite of its flaws. Biggest flaw is that the FBI team has several TSTL (too stupid to live) moments. And some of the acting is wooden.

But Heather Locklear turns in a better than expected performance, Stephen Rea is fascinating in a low-key way, and of course there is Kevin Gage. Kevin plays a swaggering, misogynistic FBI agent who's just a little behind the brain curve. Fortunately he is blessed with several amusing one-liners...unfortunately he doesn't get to do much else.

What I found most interesting about Double Tap is the blurring of lines between "bad guys" and "good guys." Cypher is a vigilante -- killing rapists and drug dealers but sparing the innocent. Katherine, tasked with capturing him, finds herself drawn to him instead. He is operating without the restraints that the law imposes on the FBI. I could understand the attraction but of course there are reasons for the rule of law, which the film seems to downplay or even ignore.

The filmmakers tried for an artsy, film noire atmosphere, and they almost succeeded. Don't bother to watch if you're in a critical mood, but if you're open to laughs and have plenty of popcorn, you may find it entertaining.

Note: Double Tap is hard to find in the U.S. It was never released on DVD in Region 1 (US/Canada), and only a limited number of video tapes were made, so they are pricey. Thanks to Lisa for letting us borrow her precious tape! After viewing it, we decided it was worth picking up the Region 2 (UK) DVD for clips and caps, but this will work for you only if you have a Region 2 player.
